POSITION TITLE: Shelter Monitor

UNIT: Bremerton Corps

REPORTS TO: Shelter Supervisor, Corps Officers

STATUS: Non-Exempt, Full-time/Part-time Hourly

PAY: $19.24

Winter Shelter Mission Statement:

To provide emergency shelter with minimal barriers. The shelter must be a safe, inviting place for those in need.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check
  • Must be a team player committed to assisting those in need
  • Must be sensitive and act accordingly to program participants dealing with multiple issues and stresses
  • Ability to create a pleasant and friendly atmosphere and develop helpful relationships
  • Ability to diffuse hostile situations, maintain order
  • Ability to document incidents and activities clearly in logs
  • Ability to describe emergency situations by telephone effectively
  • No formal education required; must demonstrate understanding of human behaviors and adaptability
  • Must show strength of character in dealing with homeless individuals with survival and manipulation skills

Summary of Job Duties:

  • Work different shifts as scheduled, including opening and closing responsibilities
  • Follow operational rules, including client admittance, personal item policies, issuing bedding, and maintaining cleanliness
  • Find replacements for scheduled shifts if needed
  • Complete shift task sheets
  • Adhere to The Salvation Army Social Services Code of Conduct
  • Provide a warm, respectful environment
  • Maintain a shelter log, review previous entries for continuity
  • Ensure safety through regular walkthroughs, conflict resolution, and communication
  • Distribute necessities, launder bedding as needed
  • Support volunteers, attend scheduled training and meetings
  • Maintain client confidentiality and report issues
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned
  • Engage in janitorial duties with provided tools and PPE as needed

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, kneel, and twist
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, reach
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
  • Operate telephone and electronic devices
